Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
